OUR STORY

We are a church with no walls and, therefore, no limits ...

For almost two centuries, BUCC has been a force of change. We were a spearhead of the anti-slavery movement, worked to advance women's rights, became a constant advocate for racial justice, and welcomed the LGBTQ+ community by embracing them with warmth and love when AIDS was ravishing the city's gay population.

We are a church with no walls and, therefore, no limits, with a diverse, growing community committed to redefining church through the lives we touch.

We invite you to experience Broadway United Church of Christ, a church where possible is everything!

Mission

Broadway United Church of Christ is a church not of stone but of individuals, gathered in community by God's love, which we celebrate through worship, study, fellowship, and service.

Celebrating the diversity of God's creation, we are an "open and affirming" congregation, and we welcome all races, cultures, stages of faith, and conditions of life.

Believing that the witness of God's church is, in large part, the witness of its members, we affirm, equip, and support one another for our ministries in the world on Christ's behalf.

For Peace & Justice

Inspired by God's intention “that they may all be one,” we cooperate with other churches and are dedicated to common ministry in Christ's name.

Continuing in our God-given tradition, we strive to do justice, make peace, and overcome the barriers dividing humankind. Confident that God is also at work through organizations other than the church, we seek partnerships with secular agencies serving those ends.

Mindful of God's infinite ways, we honor others whose different experiences of the Holy expand our own and teach us new ways of loving God, neighbor, and self.

Open & Affirming

Broadway United Church of Christ covenants for the openness and affirmation of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. We know that as Christians, we are many members, but are one body in Christ-members of one another, and that we all have different gifts.

With Jesus, we affirm that we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, that we are called to act as agents of reconciliation and wholeness within the world and within the church itself. We know that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people are often scorned by the church, and devalued and discriminated against both in the church and in society.

At Broadway United Church of Christ, we commit ourselves to caring and having concern for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other queer sisters and brothers.
