Taizé

Taizé Service

Taizé service dates for Spring 2012:

February 13,  March 12,  April 2,  May 7,  June 11

Mondays at 7:00 pm

Our Taizé service is a candle-lit half-hour* of song and silence that condenses the worship space in the sanctuary to a relaxed circle of chairs near the altar. The gathered community sing simple songs accompanied by acoustical guitar, hear a few lines of scripture or other meaningful text, and sit together in a prayerful silence.

These services occur about once a month and are patterned after the three daily prayers of the Taizé Community in France. At a basic level, Taizé worship offers us a space. It is a way of doing church where participants have a chance to listen for the ‘something more’ in this life that we Christians call God and that the brothers of Taizé call "our Source."

View a video of one of our Taizé services.  Led by Broadway Church member Wade Mitchell, our Taizé services are free and open to ALL.  For additional information, please contact the Broadway UCC office:  212-316-5700.

* Service lengths can vary, but usually last between 30-45 minutes. Participants are also encouraged to assist in cleaning up, since we use many candles to illuminate our worship.

FYI -- Taizé is pronounced "tay-zay," with the accent on the second syllable.  The above is a brief adaptation of Wade Mitchell’s informative article The Taizé Community from the 2010 September issue of the Broadway UCC newsletter.
