James P. Campbell
The Tenth Pastor, 2006 - present

Photo: James P. CampbellJames P. Campbell was called as Pastor of Broadway United Church of Christ on March 1, 2006. He is the 10th Pastor of the church since its founding in 1840.

The son and grandson of pastors, James is a graduate of Taylor University and Ashland Theological Seminary. He also completed a year of post-graduate studies in religious sociology at Drew University. Originally ordained a United Methodist, James served parishes in Ohio and New Jersey. In the mid 1990s, no longer willing to be silent about the plight of gay and lesbian people in the church, he took a leave from the professional ministry. During this time he worked in public relations and accounting, while still feeling called by God to pastoral ministry. Acknowledging that this was not possible in the United Methodist Church, James sought a professional affiliation with the United Church of Christ. In the summer of 2003, he was granted “Privilege of Call”, a designation that recognized his ordination and gave him permission to seek a pastoral call in the United Church of Christ. That call came from Broadway Church.

Pastor Campbell believes that effective ministry involves our heads, hearts and hands, something our German forebears in the UCC called "Frommigkeit" - "the warm hearted faith that is spent in the world." He is honored to serve Broadway Church, where that kind of faith has always defined our mission and ministry.

Pastor Campbell resides in Morningside Heights with his partner.
