Why Religious Liberty Matters: The Faith of the Founders (4 of 5)

Join Richard R. John, BUCC member and Columbia University history professor for a five-week class on the religious beliefs, ideas, and aspirations of the founders of the United States. This class is based on Steven Waldman’s Founding Faith, a brief (206-page) yet authoritative history that provides an engaging introduction to the radically new ideas about church and state that lie at the core of the American experiment.

Week 1 (September 24) will focus on “Christian America” (chapters 1-4)

Week 2 (October 1) on “Fighting Faiths” (chapter 5-8)

Week 3 (October 8) on “Jefferson, Madison, and Religious Freedom” (chapters 9-12);

Week 4 (October 22) on “The Radical First Amendment” (chapters 13-14)

Week 5 (October 29) “Practicing What They Preached” (chapters 15-17).

Participants are encouraged to read the chapters in advance, though this is not necessary to take part in the class.

Note: there is no class on Sunday, October 15th.
