First Hour Study: Wealth, Power & the Making of Christianity

Economic inequality—including, in particular, the enormous wealth that is today aggrandized by the 1 percent—is a pressing issue not only for Christians, but also for all Americans concerned about the future of democracy. How did our Christian forebears think about wealth, poverty, and philanthropy? What did they do about the huge wealth disparities between rich and poor?

Join Columbia historian and BUCC member Richard R. John for a five-week exploration of these questions, using as our guide Peter Brown’s magisterial Through the Eye of a Needle: Wealth, the Fall of Rome & and the Making of Christianity in the West.
