Who We Are

Testimonies, Not Tests of Faith

The United Church of Christ receives the historic creeds and confessions of the church as testimonies of the faith of our forbears, but not tests of faith for us. We cherish the freedom of conscience among our members and seek to balance that freedom in Christ with accountability to the apostolic faith and the witness of the scripture. The United Church of Christ is rooted in the covenantal tradition, beginning with God's Biblical covenants with Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Miriam and the new covenant in Jesus Christ. In our covenantal polity there is no central authority or hierarchy. Christ alone is Head of the church. Each congregation is autonomous and each church is governed democratically by its members. As each congregation is organized by covenant, so the churches within the denomination are held together by voluntary covenant. We are always seeking to balance autonomy or freedom with covenantal responsibility or steadfast love.
