James P. Campbell is the 10th Pastor of the congregation since its founding in 1840. The son and grandson of preachers, Pastor Campbell is a graduate of Taylor University and Ashland Theological Seminary. He is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at the Theological School of Drew University, with a concentration in Worship, Spirituality and Preaching. Originally ordained in the United Methodist Church, Pastor Campbell served parishes in Ohio and New Jersey. In the mid-1990s, no longer willing to be silent about the plight of gay and lesbian people in the church, he took a leave from the professional ministry. During this time he worked in public relations and accounting, all the while still feeling called by God to pastoral ministry. Acknowledging that this was not possible in the United Methodist Church, Pastor Campbell sought a professional affiliation with the United Church of Christ. In the summer of 2003, he was granted “Privilege of Call,” a designation that recognized his ordination and gave him permission to seek a pastoral call in the UCC. That call came from Broadway Church on March 1, 2006. During Pastor Campbell's tenure, the congregation has embarked upon an exciting time of renewal. The church’s membership has grown by 60% and the worship attendance has nearly doubled. There is a fresh sense of mission and purpose as we move together into the 21st century. Pastor Campbell believes that effective ministry must involve our heads, hearts and hands, something our German forebears in the UCC called "Frommigkeit" - "the warm-hearted faith that is spent in the world." He is honored to serve Broadway Church, where that kind of Christianity is so evident. Pastor Campbell resides in Morningside Heights with his spouse Marcos Martins and their Boston Terrier, Ella.
