Emily M. Brown, a lifelong UCC’er, grew up in Massachusetts and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a B.A. in Comparative Religion before moving to New York City. Emily attended Union Theological Seminary, focusing on Pastoral Ministry and Theology, and excelling in preaching, as well as biblical Hebrew and Greek. In 2010, Emily was awarded the prestigious David H. C. Read Memorial Preacher/Scholar Award, a national award presented by Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church to a seminarian who shows extraordinary promise in preaching and scholarship and who is dedicated to parish ministry. This award enabled Emily to further prepare for ministry by undertaking a formative trip to Israel in May of 2011, as well as a summer of Clinical Pastoral Education. She also received the 2010 Jonathan Kneeland Award, the preaching award given by Union Theological Seminary. Although Emily is Broadway UCC’s new Acting Associate Pastor, she is certainly not new to Broadway! Emily first attended Broadway shortly after moving to New York, and became a member in November of 2007. In 2008, she became Broadway’s seminary intern, and served the congregation for three years, becoming Student Pastor and then Pastoral Associate. She also served Judson Memorial Church as a Community Minister. Having spent several months guest preaching and seeking a call, Emily is surprised and overjoyed to be called to serve the very community which prepared her for ministry. Emily loves lists, movies, and especially lists of movies: she is currently progressing through AFI’s “100 Years, 100 Films.” She is also an avid baker. She and her spouse, Bailes Brown, live in Battery Park City. You can reach Emily by emailing her at: emily@broadwayucc.org.
NOTE: One of Emily's sermons—“Jesus Interrupted”—is now featured on www.day1.org , which is called "the voice of the mainline Protestant churches" on the web. Through sermons, blogs, and video & audio resources, Day 1 proclaims a passionate faith for thinking people.
